VIRCA Deployment Project Delegation Tours Musanze District to Enhance Cassava Seed Multiplication Practices

As part of the Virus Resistant Cassava for Africa (VIRCA) deployment project, funded by Mennonite Economic Development Associates (MEDA), a delegation embarked on an exchange study tour in Musanze District, Northern Province, on Tuesday, July 9th, 2024. The delegation included representatives from Cassava Seed Multipliers, CassVentures Ltd., and staff from Ingabo Farmers’ Syndicate, led by Chief Executive Officer Mr. Mbabazi Francois Xavier.

Learning from the Best

The delegation visited two notable centers, EGSP Imbuto and SPF Ikigega, known for their exemplary practices and advancements in potato seed multiplication. These centers have established themselves as leaders in the field, demonstrating effective techniques and innovative approaches to seed multiplication. The visits provided an opportunity for participants to exchange insights on seed multiplication value chains, exploring how these methods could be adapted and applied to cassava seed multiplication.

Gaining Valuable Knowledge

Participants gained valuable knowledge to enhance their professional skills. They learned about the latest technologies and methodologies in seed multiplication, which are essential for producing high-quality, virus-resistant cassava seeds. This knowledge is expected to significantly impact their ability to address challenges in cassava seed multiplication, particularly in finding sustainable solutions to improve seed shortages.

Enhancing Professional Skills

By learning from the best practices and advanced activities in potato seed multiplication at EGSP Imbuto and SPF Ikigega, the delegation aims to apply these insights to cassava seed multiplication. This effort is crucial for ensuring a steady supply of high-quality, virus-resistant cassava seeds, which is vital for improving cassava production in the region. The exchange of expertise will also help in developing robust strategies for seed production and distribution, ultimately benefiting farmers and enhancing food security.

A Step Towards Sustainable Agriculture

The study tour represents a significant step towards sustainable agriculture in Rwanda. By equipping cassava seed multipliers with advanced knowledge and skills, the VIRCA deployment project is fostering the development of a resilient and efficient cassava seed value chain. This initiative aligns with the broader goal of enhancing food security and economic development in the region.

Insights from the Study Tour

During the tour, the delegation observed various stages of the seed multiplication process, from planting to harvesting. They also participated in hands-on demonstrations and interactive sessions with experts at the centers. These activities provided a deeper understanding of the complexities involved in seed multiplication and the importance of maintaining high standards throughout the process.

Future Prospects

The insights gained from this study tour are expected to have long-lasting effects on cassava seed multiplication practices in Rwanda. The delegation plans to implement the knowledge acquired to improve seed production and distribution networks, ensuring that farmers have access to reliable and high-quality seeds. This initiative will not only enhance cassava yields but also contribute to the overall resilience and sustainability of Rwanda’s agricultural sector.

The VIRCA deployment project, through such initiatives, continues to make strides in transforming the agricultural landscape in Rwanda, ensuring that farmers have access to the resources and knowledge they need to thrive. This collaboration between various stakeholders underscores the importance of joint efforts in achieving sustainable agricultural development and food security.
